Representative types of shaft seals are shown in the illustrations below. The type of fluid used, the operating conditions and cost efficiency should be considered for selection of best seal type.
- GLAND PACKING
- This a popular and simple type of seal. The material should be decided according to the type of fluid.
- SINGLE MECHANICAL SEAL
- This is a widely used type of mechanical seal. Mechanical seal construction and materials of various parts selected according to the viscosity, temperature and pressure of the fluid.
- TANDEM TYPE MECHANICAL SEAL
- This type of seal is suitable for fluids which solidfy on sliding surfaces in mechanical seals and in the packing. Solvent is either circulated from outside unit or chamber to cool down and clean the seal box and extend the service life.
- DOUBLE MECHNICAL SEAL
- This is the method to attain the highest sealing performance. Pressurized solvent is circulated from outside for quenching. This method is particularly suitable for fluids which solidify easily, fluids with a high slurry content, and fluids which are absolutely prohibited from leakage. A sealant pressurized circulation system, pressureized lubiricator or equalizer is required.
